AST Oceanics provided a vessel and crew to the Australian Antarctic Division of the Department of the Environment and Energy to enable the AAD to develop and evaluate methods to estimate the abundance of blue whales in the Southern Ocean.

Project Summary
In 2013 the Australian Government sponsored a 50 day research voyage into the Southern Ocean to experiment with alternative technologies to estimate the number of blue whales in the Southern Ocean. AST Oceanics sourced and provided a suitable research vessel – the FV Amaltal Explorer – and Master for the voyage, providing a suitable platform for the research.
